Even though some fans of Jurassic Park were disappointed to see that there were less practical dinosaur effects used for last summer’s Jurassic World, that doesn’t mean the visual effects don’t deserve some praise. And if you need convincing that some fantastic work was done in post-production on the movie, a visual effects breakdown shows just how much work went into bringing the operational theme park to life. Check out the Jurassic World visual effects breakdown below.
Here’s the Jurassic World visual effects reel from Industrial Light & Magic:
Easily the most impressive part of this reel is seeing the entirely digital theme park spread out across the island. They digitally built every single part of Jurassic World and as you can see in the reel, you can move around the entire map. It would be really cool to be able to explore the park on the ground level to see all the detail.
In addition to all the negative space where the dinosaurs were added digitally, it’s funny to see an instance where there were people in place of dinosaurs for the scene with a kid riding on a tiny dinosaur’s back. It’s a little harder to do that for the bigger dinosaurs since people don’t occupy the same space, but I think it’d be interesting if there was some more motion capture used to create the dinosaurs. Might help them feel a little more authentic, like when Andy Serkis played King Kong for Peter Jackson.
Otherwise, it’s cool to see how the gyrosphere actually looks before visual effects turn it into the transparent spinning ball we see on the big screen. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind driving around that on a golf course or even around the neighborhood. It’s a pretty sweet little vehicle.
After seeing this reel, I think Jurassic World deserves a nomination for visual effects at the Academy Awards, but perhaps being the second biggest movie of 2015 and one of the biggest blockbusters ever will suffice as accolades for the movie.
The Jurassic World theme park lets guests experience the thrill of witnessing actual dinosaurs, but something ferocious lurks behind the park’s attractions – a genetically modified dinosaur with savage capabilities. When the massive creature escapes, chaos erupts across the island. Now it’s up to Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) to save the park’s tourists from an all-out prehistoric assault.
Jurassic World is available now on Blu-Ray and DVD.
